Day 98 : Hong Kong 1/3

Hong Kong - 香港

My last little trip abroad during my semester in Taiwan was in Hong Kong. Three days in this special administrative region of China, composed of several islands. With 7 million people, HK is one of the most densely populated areas in the world ! We can feel it in the streets and the metro. There are also so many foreigners. Sometimes you don't have the feeling to be in Asia. Only the Chinese caracters (and the food) remind you of it !

After an early 2 hours flight in the night, I have landed in HK with some friends. We decide to visit the Lantau Island (where the airport is) during our first day. We take a cable car to reach a little tourist village. Beautiful landscapes even if it was foggy.
We walk to the 26m-high bronze Tian Tian Buddha (or "Giant Buddha") statue. It symbolises the harmonious relationship between man and nature, people and religion. Very impressive ! It's the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statue. If you want to go to the top you need to climb the 268 steps.
Near the statue is the located the Po Lin Monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in Hong Kong. It is unfortunately under construction. We have a little breakfast here before going to Tai O, a fishing town.
Tai O was the base of many smuggling and piracy operations in the past. Now it's a little town with hundred stilt houses called "pang uk".  Traditional Chinese food like salted fish and locally produced shrimp paste can be found there.
Lantau Island is pretty cool. Now it's time to go to our hotel in Kowloon on the main island. The room is not very big, as in general in Hong Kong. We have a little nap here, we are tired ! 2 hours later (now it's the night) we want to discover the city by night, let's go ! We find lots of Christmas decorations it is so cool. We take a ferryboat to go on Hong Kong Island, the "rich part" of Hong Kong : skycrapers, office buildings, many foreigners, luxury cars, ...
Last step before go back to the hotel in Lan Kwai Fong, where you can find a large number of bars and nightclubs. A place to be at night in HK !
